If the ”Left” (whatever that is) engaged in something like this, would the staunch Right put up with it??
Not a snowball’s chance in you know where.
Here, while playing nice with the WSJ’s James Taranto, we noted what Nancy Pelosi said in regard to her somewhat foolish, politically divisive comments about “carrying swastikas.”
In response to the question “Do you think there is legitimate grassroots opposition going on here?”
Pelosi: “I think they’re astroturf. You be the judge. They’re carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on health care.”
Now imagine if some random blog were to assert the following:
First of all, in the beginning, Pelosi sort of suggested that any American citizen who dared voice an objection in a protest is a Nazi.
Put aside your partisan hat for a moment. (How much better the discussion, and perhaps the policies, if we all could do that once in a while). Just how misleading a statement is this? A pretty bad one.
What if it turned out that this statement was not made by some random blog, but by a so called major news organization; and not by some random guest trying, understandably, to spin it wildly, but by that station’s news anchor.
Pelosi’s comment was foolish, and cherry picked a few protestors who seemed to be calling health care reform (and/or the Obama administration) ”Nazism.” But she did not sort of suggest, or come remotely close to suggesting in any way, that “Any American who dared voiced an objection in protest is a Nazi.”
So what station was it? It rhymes with pox. As in: “A pox on you viewers, who think you are getting ‘fair and balanced,’ and are really getting fed exactly what you want to hear, with just enough “balance” thrown in to make you think it not outright advocacy and thus you are really coming to your own objectively formed conclusions based upon an objective and logical rendering of all the facts!” (The Anchor in question was Greg Jarrett.)
The phrase “media complicity” in the title above refers not to mother Fox — which when it comes to matters political, partisan, and policy is not a news station but an organization that very aggressively plays one on TV — but the rest of the media’s complicity in not only treating the pox upon the media station like one of them, but in often, following their lead. (Even when Fox repeatedly persists in taking subtle, and not so sublte, shots at the media itself. )
Why do Democrats put up with This? We know if the tables were reversed, and the situation one half as manipulative or false staunch Republicans wouldn’t. So why do Democrats?
Of course, Democrats methodology of “not putting up with it” might well be to simply complain about it, rather than focus on making the national story dialogue into the why, how and what of the problem in the first place. That’s the underlying problem.
