We don’t like to often get into or foment issues of racism, for the most part.  Besides, if there is any racism going on, it is likely against Gay Fish.  

But is it really likely that racism played somewhat of a role in Rep. Joe Wilson’s “You Lie” outburst against the President the other day? 

It’s hard to say. Perhaps, on some subtle level, it made Wilson more comfortable engaging in an unnecessarily confrontational and perhaps mildly disresptful response to the President’s speech?  This is a slippery slope to travel down, of that we know, and is best utilized with caution, lest every little thing suddenly be turned into an act of racism, only further perpetuating the underlying problem, and being unfair to those involved.

Still, and perhaps this is playing into it, but it is curious to note that Wilson was one of only a handful of state senators, back in 2000, who voted to keep the Confederate flag flying over the top of the North Carolina State House. True, the flag represents other things than simply a disavowel of North supporting Abe Lincoln’s abolishment of slavery, and to some may even have nothing to do with it.  But it still seems to be a mildly curious vote in light of the aforesaid outburst.
